1205--Hyman-Ave.jpg
Contributing, 1925.

Craftsman Bungalow style one and one-half story house with a cross gable roof supported by heavy braces. Shed roof addition on the north side. Walls are aluminum siding. Front porch has been enclosed, and a modern replacement front door added, but form of original porch  is still visible. Original windows are four-vertical-over-one. Some of these have been moved to the new outer wall of the porch. Original outbuilding appears to be gone. Thomas Harrison, a building contractor, and wife Florence lived here from 1937 to 1938. Benjamin Brown, assistant manager at Gulf Oil Corporation, and wife Dorothy lived here from 1941 to 1944. Ira B. Russell of Russell, Black, and Company and wife Margie lived here from 1945 to 1946. George M. Flanagan, Jr. of Flanagan Printing Company and wife Mildred lived here from 1948 to 1949. Good condition.

On August 17, 2007, William Porter stopped by to walk thru and talk about the house he lived in from 1975 through 1982.  He was very familiar with the house as his grandparents, Harry Eugene and Pearle Long Buchanan, lived here from the fifties into the sixties when he was a small boy.  His father, Charles Williamson Porter, was with GE and the family moved around until he started high school.  An older sister, Jeanie, died before he was born.  With his parents divorce, he and his mother, Sarah Belle Buchanan Porter, and sister, Melissa Belle Porter, moved into the property in 1975.  William went thru Hendersonville High School during this time.  He was a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill when his family moved out of the house in 1982.

Harry Eugene and Pearle Long Buchanan retired to this home after many years at 1230 Fifth Avenue West, now Mélange Bed and Breakfast.  William said every closet was filled with “stuff” when his grandparents lived here as they were downsizing considerable.  Harry was the manager for the Carolina and State Theaters on Main Street in Hendersonville.
